Position is technical in nature and labor intensive & employee will be required to work in diverse working environments; in all weather conditions. Recommended applicant will work in and around heavy traffic at interstate speeds, near heavy equipment, power tools, etc. Qualified individual should be familiar with and/or able to learn, but not limited to: carpentry skills, welding, pipe fitting, diving, structure painting, machine operation, inspection of various materials that compromise state bridges, large pipe or culverts, utilizing small hand tools and power tools and ability to work in a close team environment or independently as needed. This is an entry level transportation worker. To be considered, applications must be received by 5:00 PM on the closing date of the posting. *Position is located in Wilson County Bridge Department but will report to Edgecombe County Bridge Department.*

Recruitment Range $31,200 - $37,325

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Qualified applicants must submit an application thatCLEARLYreflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience using small hand tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, post hole diggers, hammer, screwdriver, torch, etc.
  • Experience performing manual labor
  • Additional Expectations: Working safely is a condition of employment. Must possess good communication skills. Follow instructions to complete assigned tasks. Demonstrated ability to operate assigned machine effectively. Use of tools associated with highway related maintenance and/or construction activities. Valid NC Driver's License required. NCDOT requires employee to obtain NC Commercial Driver's License, Class \"A\" Permit, within 60 calendar days of effective hiring date, and a valid CDL within 90 calendar days of the hire date. Continued employment is contingent upon possession of valid CDL. Pre-employment drug testing may be required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Steel-toed safety shoes are required. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    High school education General Educational Development Diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Requirement Possession of a current Commercial Driver s License is mandatory for essential duties. CDL can be obtained through on-the-job training with a 60 day grace period to obtain a CDL Permit and 90 days to obtain a License.
